One new high efficiency air handler was installed for much of the first floor. There are minimal duct runs from this unit to be as energy efficient as possible. The kitchen and upstairs are now heated and cooled by very efficient heat pumps made by Mitsubishi. These heat pumps do not have ducts. A ductless system was important to be able to install a new heating and cooling system easily in this 1906 structure. There is a 1a??? round pipe from the outside box up to each Mitsubishi unit. During the upgrade of the HVAC systems we were able to reduce the amount of ducts at least 50%. We also were able to reset many of the ducts to be more in a straight line to enable the air to move very efficiently. This was extremely beneficial on the top floor where the previous ducts were pinched into very tight spaces. Now the heat pumps work very effectively and the energy bills are very reasonable. These units have been very popular over the last ten plus years for new and renovated structures. Each Mitsubishi heat pump has its own controls with more flexibility and energy efficiency. Each occupant of a room can determine the temperature of that room and if the room is not in use the unit can be setback or turned off to save more energy. The Mitsubishi brand was recommended by the HVAC engineer as the top of the line residential heat pump, which should work very effectively for many years.
